I'm playing Hamlet in my school's production, and the more I get to know him, the more I'm disgusted by him. Help my find some redeeming qualities?
Okay, anon. I feel you, I really do. Hamlet at the surface is an idiot and a total jerkhead that whiny guys empathize with waaay too much.
But: that’s the influence of hundred of years of male academics looking at the play and trying to connect it to their own lives and ‘deep thoughts’ (I’m looking at you, Victorians.) I want you to consider this instead: Hamlet is not actually anything like how he portrays himself during the play.
