Remember the short lived series “Will” that was on the TNT television network that tried to create Shakespeare’s “lost years” using a blend of Elizabethan England and punk rock feel and look to it?

Remember how Shakespeare had the biggest crush on Christopher Marlowe? And vice versa?

Those were the days.

One of My Complaints About “Will.” ***Warning: Slight spoilers ahead.***

I love “Will,” don’t get me wrong. I do have a complaint about it though.

I feel like the show does not explore characters who do not fit cis/hetero molds nearly enough. While we do have a very gay Kit Marlowe with his many lovers, and while Shakeslowe viewers got one kiss and many moments of sexual tension, and those scenes with Kit having not just one, but TWO gay orgies, I just feel like the writers could do a lot better. While we did get to see a softer side of Kit with his dying lover, it just painfully reminded me of the “Bury Your Gays” trope.

Don’t get me wrong: I love seeing anything queer on screen. I just feel like the show does not explore it more in depth. Like, does Will still think about Kit, and vice versa? Is Kit’s (what I see as) depression partly stem from not being able to court Will? How about other characters? Do they have queer relationships or feelings towards others? I’m scared the show will queerbait. The show usually cuts the scene where you KNOW something will happen (like with Kit and his now deceased lover) or the show will stop for commercial and imply that something will happen between two characters who happen to be queer or queercoded (when Kit showed Will upstairs, and the commercial cut suggested that something sexual would happen, but it ended up something totally different).

Although I am lucky to have a canon character (Kit) who is gay and the show briefly shows queer content, I can argue the queer content is dominated by the straight content. I just want both queer and straight content to be represented equally on screen. I’m glad fanfiction of this show exists on AO3, but I want more canon queer stuff. (I also want Will to, you know, be canonized as bisexual.) I want characters who question their sexuality and/or gender identity. Will we see canon wlw relationships? More canon mlm relationships?

Representation matters. While I think “Will” has a lot of good qualities, it can work on improving itself.

Feel free to add anything that you need that needs to be said or reiterated.

Another complaint many have had that I agree w: they really could have fasted more actors of color

Upstart crows beautified with our feathers, they flock to London to ape their betters. Whether fine-feathered or the most common of bird, to wing our way to Heaven, all we need are words.
